Selenite- Queen of Cleansing

Beautiful selenite is a cornerstone of any crystal collection. If you’re looking for something fresh and clean to kick off a fresh new year this January and foster a blank-slate state of mind, selenite is the stone for you. It’s one of the few stones that don’t require cleansing of their own—though she never minds spending a little time in the moonlight from which her name is derived. We frequently call upon selenite to cleanse other stones. You can place it around the home for protection and to support positive energies. You can also pair it with grounding stones like tourmaline, onyx, or obsidian to create a balanced set of poles.

Selenite comes in a variety of forms. Gorgeous towers make excellent centerpieces on altars or displays. Selenite wands are an effective and low-cost option for those who are looking for crystals to incorporate directly into ritual. Desert rose selenite looks just as it sounds, like a rose compiled of several small petals layered together.

Selenite and its close relatives like satin spar are types of gypsum. Moisture damages this rock, so don’t include it in any type of bath. You can, however, use it to cleanse and raise your own vibration. Harness its power by keeping it on hand for meditation or any other practice in which you want to maximize your energetic flow.

Garnet

January’s birthstone, gorgeous garnet is well-known for its use in jewelry. You’ve likely seen it as a polished red gem most often, though it does come in other colors like the rich orange pictured above.

This stone is great for getting into your lower chakras, which can help you to ground your energy and facilitate creative expression. When working with this stone and these chakras, think about the parts of the body encompassed therein. Root and sacral chakras, associated with red and orange respectively, evoke ideas of survival and connection, concepts which are completely interdependent in our daily lives.

Garnet is a wonderful stone to work with in the following exercise, which may help you uncover some new goals this January.

Ask yourself, “What do I need right now?” There’s a good chance the answer will be, “Nothing.” In this moment, with breath flowing in and out, you have everything you need. If you don’t, get up! Go tend to yourself!

Once you’ve done that, think about your connection to community. This What do you take from your surroundings? What of those things serve you and what could you leave behind? What do you give of yourself? How does it benefit others? Is it something you can replenish?

Garnet will help you uncover the creative gifts you have to offer to the world. Your true gifts are ones that you can give and give without depleting your own vital energy.

Rainbow Moonstone

Radical Aquarians are known for their otherworldly qualities. Despite being highly humanitarian, they are the aliens of the zodiac. What better stone to usher in their season than the ethereal rainbow moonstone?

Like selenite, we’ve named this beauty after the moon. Also like selenite, we use rainbow moonstone to clear the aura and provide protection. If you are hoping to expand some of your intuitive practices this January, use this crystal to harness that energy. Hanging onto a piece of moonstone can enhance your connection to your higher chakras as well as promote lucid dreaming. We often associate this stone with the goddess archetype and can use it to invoke her deep wisdom.
